Confronting Our Darkest Secrets

Boyz Weekend: A Future Novel by Roger Griffith

Boyz Weekend isn’t your typical lads’ weekend away. It’s a confrontation with the past. A reckoning with unresolved trauma. It’s an exploration of masculinity that delves into the complex and destructive dynamics of male friendship and betrayal.

Imagine The Hangover colliding with the gritty realism of This is England, filtered through the unsettling horror of an urban James Herbert. That’s the atmosphere I’ve aimed to create for the reader. It’s a story that provides a rollercoaster of emotions and violence that draw you to past crimes and misdemeanours.

At the heart of the story is Vinnie, a man released from prison after 22 years, seeking answers to the events that landed him behind bars. His gatecrashing of his former friends’ stag-weekend throws their carefully constructed lives into chaos.

Set in 2003, before the all-consuming grip of social media, the story unfolds over one sweltering weekend in a fictional British city. Vinnie is haunted by the memory of his dead girlfriend, a constant reminder of the night that changed everything. He’s determined to confront his former friends and unravel the secrets and lies.

Set-pieces, ranging from medieval banquets to illegal bare-knuckle fights, keep the tension high and the stakes even higher. This isn’t just a story about men; it’s also about the women who love, support and challenge them. They play a vital role in exposing the best and worst of male nature, forcing them to confront their demons.

It tackles issues of race, class and crime with unflinching honesty. It delves into the complexities of prison rehabilitation and the impact of mental health struggles. The dialogue is sharp, laced with dark humour, but beneath the surface lies a tragic undercurrent exposing male vulnerability.

Boyz Weekend is more than just a contemporary fiction thriller; it’s a reflection on the choices we make and the consequences. It’s about the darkness that lurks beneath the surface of ordinary lives.
